Mapleshade has actually said herself that she belongs in the DF. She definitely did something awful.
Sure, her life wasn't that great, but she didn't have to kill. What she did, she brought upon herself. She is bloodthirsty and very one-dimensional. Her backstory is cliche--the OMG TRAGIC PAST has been done to Pluto and back. Mapleshade made ridiculous excuses for her actions--she killed Spottedleaf because Spottedleaf didn't resent Sandstorm, for StarClan's sake! Instead of doing the logical thing and killing her mate and her mate's new mate before retiring, she decided to make his grandson's life miserable. It draws parallels with the Greek gods--curse the firstborn son of those who have wronged you--and that's just not a good strategy.
Back to Spottedleaf. She drew parallels with herself and Spottedleaf, as well as with her mate's new mate and Sandstorm. Oookay then. The logical thing to do would to be to kill Sandstorm, and maybe Firestar for good measure. Instead, she stops short once Spottedleaf tries to stop her and...kills Spottedleaf. Again, logic says she would have gotten Spottedleaf off and killed Sandstorm, instead of killing the cat she saw as in her predicament. Mapleshade just wasn't a good villain.
