There's always those annoying characters, on every single site, that have no logic or reasoning for the way they behave. There's many versions of a mary sue, not just the generic 'perfect' characters. Some traits are more useful than others, and even if your cat has faults, if (s)he is skilled in the things that matter, the negative habits are rather minuscule in comparison to their feats. I've been role playing for five years, and throughout my experiences I've learned in time how to avoid making boring, run of the mill cats, and succeeded in successfully creating colorful characters without a whole lot of effort. In this thread, you'll find useful tips, and hopefully it helps everyone out, even just a little.
Here's a list of do's and don'ts ;;
Make your character think 'outside the box'. However, it is very easy to cross the line of making your character think so insanely that he or she stands out in a negative way. Be cautious of how far off the wall you go with this one.
Give your characters a rich, thought out history! Don't overwork their histories to the point that it's unrealistically tragic, though. The occasional bad past is great, but most cats don't go through traumatic things on a day to day basis.
Nobody is evil for no reason. How many people do you see roaming the street murdering people just because? Raping? Fighting? There's a past behind every psychopath. Don't make randomly evil, bad, or even sharp-tongued cats without reason. There must be good logic behind a cat who is evil, partially insane etc. Other causes could be trauma, complications during birth, and or undeveloped brain functions. This information has to be noted in the history. If your history and personality of the cat at hand are thought out enough, this shouldn't be an issue.
It's okay to have a plain old tabby cat! Okay, even I am guilty of LOVING unrealistically beautiful cats. Most of my older characters have odd coat colors/patterns. I've tried more recently to stick to plainer cats, and I encourage all of you to do the same.
No cat will ever be good at everything. Please, for the sake of us all, don't make any more stereotypical 'Firestar' warriors. No, your cat cannot really be supremely agile and skilled in hunting, fighting, and parenting. It's more interesting when your character is bad at crucial tasks.
Spice it up! Make all of your characters different. I hate it when there's an amazing role player, but all of their cats are the same bland, tasteless mold they've set themselves into. It's very easy to favor a certain personality type, and even more easy to fall into that standard of cat.
This thread will be expanded and worked on as the staff see fit. If any of you have ideas for this thread, please PM Sparrow, myself, or Sunpelt.
